A Botnet Accidentally Destroyed I2P (The Full Story)

On February 3, 2026, the I2P anonymity network was flooded with 700,000 hostile nodes in what became one of the most devastating Sybil attacks an anonymity network has ever experienced. The network normally operates with 15,000 to 20,000 active devices. The attackers overwhelmed it by a factor of 39 to 1.

For three consecutive years, I2P has been hit with Sybil attacks every February. The 2023 and 2024 attacks used malicious floodfill routers and remain unattributed. When the 2026 attack began, most assumed it was the same state-sponsored operation continuing its annual disruption campaign. The assumption was wrong.

The attacker was identified as the Kimwolf botnet, an IoT botnet that infected millions of devices including streaming boxes and consumer routers throughout late 2025. Kimwolf is the same operation behind the record-setting 31.4 terabit per second DDoS attack in December 2025. The operators admitted on Discord they accidentally disrupted I2P while attempting to use the network as backup command-and-control infrastructure after security researchers destroyed over 550 of their primary C2 servers.

The I2P development team responded by shipping version 2.11.0 just six days after the attack began. The release includes hybrid ML-KEM plus X25519 post-quantum encryption enabled by default, making I2P one of the first production anonymity networks to ship post-quantum cryptography to all users. Additional Sybil mitigations, SAMv3 API upgrades, and infrastructure improvements were included.

On February 3, 2026, President Trump signed Public Law 119-75, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, which preserved funding for Section 24220 of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This mandate requires all new passenger vehicles starting with model year 2027 to include advanced impaired driving prevention technology that passively monitors drivers and can disable vehicles if impairment is detected.

The House rejected Rep. Thomas Massie's defunding amendment 164 to 268 on January 22, with 57 Republicans joining 211 Democrats to keep the mandate funded. The No Kill Switches in Cars Act, introduced by Rep. Scott Perry to repeal Section 24220 outright, has a 2 percent chance of passing committee according to GovTrack analysis.

Apple rolled identity verification into iOS 26.4 for UK users under the Online Safety Act, requiring credit card scans or government photo ID to confirm users are over 18. If you decline, app downloads and in-app purchases get restricted on a phone you already own. The system is expanding to Australia, Brazil, and Singapore, with US lawmakers pushing identical requirements.

They call it age verification. What it actually does is collect government-issued identification and biometric data, then run it through identity screening infrastructure that has nothing to do with age. Persona, the San Francisco startup handling this for Reddit, Discord, OpenAI, and Roblox, performs 269 distinct verification checks on every identity, including terrorism watchlist screening and politically exposed person lookups. Persona received $350 million in funding led by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, the same Thiel who co-founded Palantir, the surveillance operation powering ICE's deportation infrastructure.

The security track record is exactly what you'd expect. Hackers breached 5CA, a third-party contractor used by Discord, in September 2025, exposing approximately 70,000 government ID photos. Researchers later found Persona's code running on a US government-authorized server. Discord cut ties with Persona but the company still serves OpenAI and Roblox.

UK Reddit users now submit government ID through Persona to access sexual assault support communities and addiction recovery forums. More than 550,000 people petitioned parliament to repeal the Online Safety Act. It was debated in a mostly empty room with no vote taken. The House of Lords then voted 207 to 159 to extend identity verification to VPN providers. Smaller forums and independent communities are shutting down under compliance costs. The solution is not petitioning the institution building the surveillance, it is using systems like GrapheneOS that make the identity collection infrastructure irrelevant.

Congress Built the Backdoor That Got Hacked Then Banned Your Router

In 1994 Congress passed CALEA the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act forcing every telecom company in America to build surveillance backdoors into their networks. In 2006 the FCC expanded that mandate to broadband internet.

The FCC had statutory authority to enforce security provisions on those systems and never did across multiple administrations because telecom companies lobbied against it. In 2024 Chinese state hackers from Salt Typhoon compromised nine major US telecom companies including Verizon AT&T and T-Mobile by exploiting those exact government-mandated lawful intercept systems accessing the contents of phone calls from political targets.

This was predictable because it already happened in 2005 when attackers exploited lawful intercept systems on Vodafone Greece to tap the Prime Minister and over 100 officials for months and the engineer who discovered it was found dead. On March 23 2026 the FCC responded to these breaches by adding every foreign-made consumer router to its Covered List banning new models from import and sale. Volt Typhoon compromised Cisco and Netgear equipment using known unpatched vulnerabilities. Flax Typhoon built a 260000 device botnet using 70 published CVEs.

Every major attack came through American-made equipment and government-mandated backdoors not secret Chinese hardware. Not a single consumer router is manufactured in the United States. The conditional approval process gives companies 18 months but facility construction takes 15 to 40 months. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr worked at Wiley Rein representing AT&T and Verizon then in November 2025 rescinded the cybersecurity rules created after Salt Typhoon before banning foreign routers four months later citing the same attack. The telecom sector spent 585.7 million on lobbying in 2024. This video traces the problem from CALEA to Salt Typhoon to the router ban and shows why the government created the vulnerability it now claims to be fixing.
